And Books For All

I was moved by Doris Lessing's plea for books in Africa and wondered what I could do about it. Then life caught up with my contemplative moment and moved on. It's wonderful that others were already there, doing what I only thought about momentarily.

Books are indeed scarce in Africa. In 1996, three camels and a handful of visionaries changed all that. I give you, The Camel Book Drive.

I'm working on getting a club on-campus to do a book drive to donate somewhere.

I really think this is a worthwhile project. I'm going to organize my cubscouts to a book drive.

Amazing. I was also moved by Lessing's Nobel prize speech on the topic -- it really opens your eyes to the things you take for granted or even gripe and complain about -- like the boxes of books in the attic that we haven't unpacked yet from when we moved here! (glurp, seven years ago, glurp) ;) I wonder if the bookcrossing.com community would be into this?

That's a fantastic idea, Lydia.
